Biodiversity

This year we are striving towards our 5th Green School Flag. The theme this time is biodiversity. We will be trying to make our school a welcoming environment for a diverse number of insects, birds and mammals. The first step this year was taken by 3rd and 4th class who introduced an alder tree to our school garden. The alder is a native tree of Ireland. An alder tree can have 90 dependent insect species. These insects then attract birds, the birds attract small mammals and thus creates a food chain. This is an important aspect of biodiversity and are working to make people aware of the interdependence of humans and nature. We hope that the new alder tree will be attractive to lots of native creatures.
